Sun Bears normally spend most of their daytime sleeping and sunbathing in nests that they make in trees. These bears spend much of their night foraging for food. Since Sun Bears live in a warm climate, they do not hibernate and tend to remain active all year round. The Sun Bear forages in the forest at considerable speed, using its excellent sense of smell.
Sun bears sometimes may cause a great deal of damage to coconut palms and cocoa plantations. Sun bear cubs are sometimes kept as pets in their native lands. However, they do not make obedient pets, as they tend to grow bad-tempered with age.
Sun Bears - Reproduction
Sun Bears may mate at any time of the year. Females usually give birth to a pair of cubs in some remote part of the forest. The tiny newborn cubs are helpless, with a nearly transparent skin. The male actually remains as part of the family group. Female Sun bears first mate at about 3 years of age. The actual mating period lasts from two days to a week. During the breeding season, the Sun bear mating pair displays such behavior as hugging, mock fighting and head bobbing. The cubs tend to stay with their mothers until they are almost full-grown and are capable of taking care of themselves. The average life span of Sun Bears is about 25 years.
