Sun Bears - Diet
Sun Bears are omnivores, which means that they eat both plants and animals. In the wild, Sun Bears feed on birds, fruit, honey, growing tips palm trees, roots, termites and small mammals. The diet of Sun Bears varies due to the availability of food, which they can obtain locally. In the zoo, Sun Bears are provided with fruit, such as apples and oranges, omnivore biscuits soaked in water, and other food suitable for them.
Sun Bears - Conservation Status
Sun bears are rare animals. There is no exact data as to how many Sun bears there are nowadays. Deforestation and hunting have a great negative impact on their population in the wild. Sun bears live in smaller patches now that some of their habitats have been
destructed.
The gall bladders and other body parts of Sun bears are known to be used in folk medical practices. Some people hunt the Sun bear for sport and profit. The bears are sometimes sold as pets.
Due to the lack of knowledge about Sun Bears, little have been done in the sphere of conservation efforts. Sun Bear research projects were
started in some areas, for instance, in Borneo. Many zoos support field studies on Sun bears. Information on life cycle, and behavior of Sun Bears will allow administrators to improve zoo-based breeding programs and reproduction efforts of these animals in the wild.
